From the Garden

Josh was very keen to get a garden started when we decided to stay put in Hobart for a while. He first converted a strip of the lawn into a little side bed, then moved on to creating a larger raised bed.

The weather in Hobart allows for excellent growing year-round, because it doesn't get too cold in winter. We planted beautiful heirloom varieties of lettuce, tomatoes, leeks, carrots, pumpkins, cucumber, kale, beans, peas, and the list goes on! Food tastes so much better when you've grown it yourself!

This was the best cabbage we have ever tasted...no joke. We decided to call it "sugar cabbage" because you could just eat the raw leaves by themselves and they were so sweet! The joys of growing your own food!

Phase two was converting part of Nanny's driveway into a raised bed (she's never driven, so she wasn't using her parking space).

Sometimes you just want some freshly picked broccoli in the middle of the night.

Happiness is a bowl of freshly dug potatoes! We never bought any seed potatoes; we grew about six new plants from two potatoes which had sprouted under the sink!

Hey you guys! Your veggie garden is awesome. Erik and I are big time missing our mini garden and all the inspired preserving yielded from our bounty. Since moving (temporarily) to Edmonton we decided to forgo the shoveling of snow and move into a condo. Sigh. No Fresh veg.
I'm in full support for less silly lawn, and more front yard farms. And I agree tasting your own hard work is the best taste there is. Hope you guys are awesome, love your blog.

Thanks for the kind comments Kristen. We are missing our garden too since we are currently living out of the back of a truck. Fortunately Australia is a good place to find year round fresh veggies and farmers' markets are common. Setting up a new garden will be one of the first things we do once we are sedentary again!
