Lima, Peru

National Museum of Anthropology

Huaca Pucllana is a pre-colonial site in the Miraflores district of Lima which was constructed by the Lima culture in ~ 400 AD. The adobe bricks used in the construction were stacked using the "bookshelf method" which has proven effective in resisting earthquakes. The site was once 20 acres, however urban development has reduced it to 6. Prior to the 1980s the site was used as a motocross track until archaeological excavations began in 1982.
