Food in Mexico City

We spent our time in Mexico city with our amazing friends Polo and Miranda. While there, we ate all kinds of great food, both at their home, with friends and family, and at restaurants and food stands.

One of our favourite experiences in Mexico city was going to visit Polo's uncle who is a professional tamale maker. After negotiating the metro system during rush hour we spent the evening with Uncle Tamale learning how to make an assortment of different kinds of tamales. When we were finished we got to eat our creations.

Around the Zócalo

Mexico city's Zócalo is one of the largest city squares in the world. We were there in December and they had all sorts of Christmas decorations, plastic igloos, a small tobogan run and even an ice rink set up (all this in about 20-25 degree weather). The skating rink was only open at night because of the slightly cooler temperatures.

Inside the Catedral


The Templo Mayor , which belonged to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Mexico City was built on top of the Aztec site, so much of it remains buried beneath the colonial buildings and streets. This small portion has only been excavated over the last 60 years.

Museo de Antropologia

Mexico City has more museums than any other city in the world. We spent a day in the Museo de Antropologia and saw less than a quarter of it (despite trying to rush). Below is a sample of its amazing collection of pre-colonial Mexican art. Many of these artifacts were found at sites we later visited.
